Hello, beautiful souls! I am glad that you are interested in learning about the chakras. This post is a beginners guide to what chakras are, their purpose, and how to spot imbalances in each.
In simple terms, the chakras are the energy centers that reside inside our body and control our homeostasis. The name Chakras originated in the Vedas, which was the original hindu text, around 1500 bce. The buddhist also closely followed the chakra system. Other religions like the mayan and Mexicans, had similar ideas that there are energy centers in the body. Some believe there are 7, 8, or 9 chakras, but I will be focusing on the basic body chakras in this post, which is 7.
1. Root Chakra
-The root chakra is located at the base of the spine in between the genitals and anus and includes the lower part of the body. The translation of the original name means grounding. This chakra is responsible for your sense of security, stability, primal instinct, and connection to the earth. The root chakra is reponsible for removing the toxins from the body, which is regulated through the earth. Our energy needs to be released somehow, so it is imperative to go out into nature as much as possible so the superfluous energy can be released. Common signs of imbalance include: disconnection, fatigue, financial issues, feeling unsure, not grounded, hoarding, fear of change, paranoia,
2. Sacral chakra:
-The sacral chakra is located just below the belly button. This chakra is the emotional and creative center, and also has to do with sexuality and intuition. This chakra is directly connected to the amygdala, which is the fight or flight part of the brain. It Is associated with the water element. When this chakra is balanced, you will feel safe to express your creativity and sexuality. You will feel a sense of peace and security in yourself. Emotions will flow freely without any blockages. When this chakra is out of balance, common symptoms include: lack of libido, lack of energy, lack of motivation, lack of creativity, decency on others, apathetic, poor digestion or urinary issues, hypersexuality, fear, and restlessness.
3. Solar plexus
-the solar plexus is located at right below the ribcage in the sternum. It is known as the center of self, strength, will, identity, and confidence. When the solar plexus is balanced, you will feel strong in yourself and decisions, including strength in will and identity. If it is over active, you will be aggressive, angry, impatient, overly self critical, seek constant validation from others, and express hubris. An underactive solar plexus will make you feel inadequate, unsure of your decisions, unsure of your place and identity, or unable to control your desires or discipline. Symptoms can also manifest as heat, tightness, or pain in the sternum, abdominal issues, and constant fatigue.
4. Heart Chakra
-The heart chakra, also known as the middle chakra or the gateway to the spirit world, is the most important chakra. The heart chakra regulates the whole body and when out of balance, can cause issues in other areas as well. In order to align all chakras, the heart chakra must first be opened to allow energy to flow to each center. If not, the blocked energy will be unable to flow. The heart chakra is the center of love, peace, compassion, forgiveness, and understanding. Think of it as the tree that all roots stem from. With an under active heart chakra, you may feel apathetic, numb, unable to feel love or emotion, tightness in chest, no sympathy, or trouble loving yourself. An overactive heart chakra will often make someone attached to people in toxic ways, making it where they overly empathize and take on others energy.
5. Throat chakra
-The throat chakra is the center of expression and communication. The place where you take all the energy sitting inside of you and release it in your own, authentic way. The place where we express our individual needs and boundaries with others. Someone who has an underactive throat chakra will have difficulty expressing themselves properly, either because they are afraid to do so, or they don’t feel heard. It may be hard to communicate clearly with others and express their genuine feelings. This can manifest as a rock in the throat and physically unable to express their thoughts. When this chakra is over active, people will feel a sense of urgency to be heard and constantly talk over people or incessantly without halt. Other symptoms may include constant sore throat, shyness, or neck issues. The throat chakra is like the exit route for all energy within the body. When we feel heavy emotions, we often express it through our voice via yelling, crying, or simply talking out our feelings. This is imperative to know because if we don’t feel safe to express our deep emotions, they will sit inside of us and manifest as different ailments over time.
6. Third Eye
-The third eye, the place of imagination and intuition, located between the eyes on the forehead. In the munay ki, the practices of the indigenous Q’ero people of the Andes mountains, they always bless the 3 centers. They focus on the stomach, which is taking right action; the heart, which is living only through love; and the third eye, which is right vision. All of our dreams manifest through the third eye. It is where we vision our future and where our divine creativity lies. All psychic messages are processed and delineated in the third eye; including messages from our higher self and divine spirits around us. When this chakra is out of balance, you may feel disconnected from your higher self, lack imagination or intuition, and have trouble expressing your creative side. Other physical symptoms may include headaches, migraines, pressure in the head, insomnia, or other issues in the eye and head area.
7. Crown Chakra
-located at the top of the head in the scalp, this chakra is the connecting point between human and spirit. Think of it like a lamp that shines above our head, acting as a reiceving signal for divine spirits to reach us. The beacon for the ethereal realm. With this chakra out of balance, you may feel a lack of purpose, no connection to your higher power, confusion, brain fog, headaches, tiredness, and existential issues. When we connect with this chakra, our mind and heart opens to everything around us. You feel energy flowing in you and messages will come in freely along with deep peace and understanding.
Energy is constantly flowing through your body and much of it is left unaddressed and misunderstood. This unwanted energy needs to be released so our bodies can flow freely without blockages. Think of each chakra and how they may have imbalances at times for you. What pain is it causing you emotionally and physically?
